Flu vaccine

What you need to KNOW about the flu shot this year

Here’s what you need to know about the flu shot so you can stay healthy this flu season.

  1. No, it’s not too soon to get one.

Flu can begin anytime in September thru June. In tropic areas it occurs year round so if you travel to the tropics or flu in an airplane that has someone in it that has, you can get exposed to the flu anytime.

  1. No, it won’t wear off if you get it now.

The reason you get a flu shot every year is because the flu mutates into different forms not because it “wears off”.

  1. No, you can’t get the flu from the flu shot.

It is biologically impossible. You may feel a little punk for a few days after any vaccine because your body is making antibodies to the code it just received. This can feel like the same thing that can happen when your body is exposed to a virus or bacteria and is making antibodies , too. This doesn’t mean you get a mild case of the flu. If you wait until you get exposed for your body to make antibodies it can take days, meanwhile the viruses or bacteria are replicating.  If you’ve had a vaccine, as soon as you are exposed, the antibodies are already there, waiting to do their job to protect you.

  1. 4. No, the flu is not a cold.

Both are viruses but different viruses that cause different symptoms and different infections. Flu is a illness that comes on suddenly, with fever, body aches, cough, runny nose and lasts days to a few weeks and lands most people in bed. A cold has a gradual onset , with cough, runny nose, sore throat and doesn’t incapacitate you. The flu is more severe and kills thousands of people every year. Colds don’t kill. Colds can’t be prevented by vaccines. The flu can be prevented with a vaccine.

  1. No, there is nothing else that can protect you as much from the flu than a flu shot.

It is not 100% protective but getting a flu shot reduces the severity and likelihood that you will die from the flu. Washing your hands often, staying away from people who have the flu, getting enough fluids, rest, and exercising and eating right can all help your immune system stay healthy but the flu shot is your best protection.

You can get your flu shot at Travel Health of New Hampshire and we can come to your company and give flu shots there, too.
